Season Recap
In 2019, the Crew started with a new ownership group, a new team president (Bezbatchenko), a new technical director (Onstad), a new coach (Porter), and all arrived with about 2 months left before the start of the season. Necessarily, the Crew ran it back with the same roster that led them to two consecutive deep playoff runs.
Spoiler alert: It didn’t go well.
The Crew started off strong, with 4 wins and 17 points from their first 6 matches. From April until August, the Crew strung together an impressively futile stretch, going 1-13-1 (W/L/D) over 15 matches, ending almost any hope of a third consecutive postseason experience. Amongst this terrible stretch, club legend Federico Higuain suffered a season ending injury against Colorado on May 25th. Following the summer transfer window, the team’s play improved, going 5-2-6 (W/L/D) over the last 13 games, but not enough to sneak into the playoffs.
One of the leading causes for decline for the Crew was terrible injury luck. Columbus lost Federico Higuain and Milton Valenzuela to season-ending injuries, and Hector Jimenez, Harrison Afful, Waylon Francis, Gaston Sauro and Josh Williams all missed significant periods of time in defense.
Last summer also saw the start of a massive overhaul on the field. Zack Steffen left for Man City following the gold cup, and fan favorites Justin Meram and Gaston Sauro were also sent packing. The summer transfer window saw reinforcements in new starting GK Eloy Room, Young DP winger Luis Diaz, and Int’l winger Youness Mokhtar.
This offseason, the Crew said goodbye to their homegrown captain, trading Wil Trapp to Miami, and officially cut ties with Federico Higuain. Following 2019, the Crew had truly exited the Gregg Berhalter era, with the roster bearing little resemblance to the team that made 3 deep playoff runs during Berhalter's tenure.

Players to Watch
Gyasi Zardes ST Age: 28 3rd Season (Winter ’18)
Despite being viewed as a known quantity around these parts, it’s easy to forget that 2 seasons ago Gyasi was being played at RB by MLS and Crew legend Sigi Schmid. Since coming to Columbus, Zardes has posted 19 and 13 goals in his two seasons in Columbus. Zardes’ 2019 season saw him struggle to get service at times, especially with the rotating cast of wingers the Crew trotted out last season (9 different wingers saw time). Zardes became less isolated following the acquisition of Luis Diaz, and the move of Pedro Santos to the #10, leading to optimism for his performance this season, with a loaded attack ready to provide support. This season will be the first where Zardes has legitimate competition, as Fanando Adi was brought in off waivers, but Zardes is being paid as a DP now, and will likely get a long leash from Porter.
Lucas Zelarayan CAM Age: 27 7+ Mil Transfer from Tigres
Zelarayan was the blockbuster signing from this window, and the signature signing in the Haslam/Edwards Era. Columbus shelled out over 7 million dollars for Zelarayan, smashing the prior transfer record (2M for Pedro Santos). Porter has said they want the Crew to become Zelarayan’s team, and that role is what attracted him to Columbus. Lucas replaces a team legend in Federico Higuain, whose contract expired after 7 seasons in Columbus.
Luis Diaz RM Age: 21 2nd Season (Summer ’19)
Diaz arrived during the summer transfer window from Herediano, and immediately added a vertical threat on the wings that the Crew had been missing. Diaz finished 2019 with 2 goals and 4 assists in 13 games, and was often the most dangerous attacking threat on the field. If you want to understand what a threat Diaz is, look up the highlights from the Crew’s Hell Is Real 3-1 win in Cincinnati last august, where Diaz had a goal and an assist, and was a terror on the field. In this attacking set up, expect Diaz to add the vertical threat down the wings along with LB Milton Valenzuela.
Darlington Nagbe CM Age: 29 Trade from Atlanta United (1Mil+ GAM)
The trade everyone had been anticipating for a year happened this winter, with Tim Bez and Caleb Porter shipping a load of GarberBucks to Atlanta for Nagbe. Nagbe represents the kind of midfielder Porter felt he was missing in his first season with the Crew: a monster in possession who can be more attacking than the trio of Trapp, Artur and Guzman were last season. The Columbus midfield was a weakness last season, and Porter is counting on Nagbe turning it into a strength.
Milton Valenzuela LB Age: 21 3rd Season (Winter ’18)
You would be forgiven for having forgotten about Milton. After bursting on the scene in 2018 to be one of the best LBs in MLS at just 19, Valenzuela tore his ACL in preseason camp in 2019. Waylon Francis and Hector Jimenez performed admirably in his absence, but 1) the injury bug caused the Crew to play RB Connor Maloney at LB for way too many games, and 2) none of these players has the talent and two-way play of Valenzuela. In 2018, Milton was one of, if not the best 1v1 defenders on the team, in addition to his offensive contributions (1g/6a). His presence will not only solidify the Columbus defense, but allow Pedro Santos, now on the wing, the freedom to cut inside when needed. Do not be shocked if Milton is a Best XI defender this season.
Jonathan Mensah CB Age: 29 4th Season (Winter ’17)
Jonathan Mensah has been the rock of the Crew defense for the last 2 seasons. Despite not having a consistent partnership at CB, Mensah has performed at a high level for most of his Crew tenure (We’ll choose to ignore those first 6 months). While the Crew has not yet named a new captain following Wil Trapp’s departure, Mensah is one of the frontrunners to take the armband. This season, Mensah is projected to have a consistent CB partner, with veteran Vito Wormgoor brought in to start alongside Jonathan.
Eloy Room GK Age: 31 2nd Season (Summer ’19)
Room was signed as Zack Steffen’s replacement in goal following a standout performance at the Gold Cup. Room has been a wall since his arrival in Columbus, being a reliable shot stopper in goal in front of a very shaky and injured Columbus defense. Eloy has fast become a fan favorite, and should be the beneficiary of an improved defense. Room could very well be a contender for GK of the Year in a good crop of keepers.
A look forward to 2020:
You may not realize it from the blurbs above, but this is a well-balanced roster. Tim Bez has built a roster with a number of young, exciting talents (Valenzuela, Diaz, Artur, Cadden, Keita), key contributors in their primes (Zelarayan, Zardes, Mensah, Nagbe), and Veterans in key positions (Wormgoor, Santos, Room, Afful, Josh Williams). This team is built to compete, and it’s built to compete now.
Best Case Scenario:
1st Place Eastern Conference (62 pts), MLS Cup Champions:
Caleb Porter enters his second season with a team built to his specifications, and they make him look good. The Crew, while nominally a possession-based club, start scoring goals in bunches by forcing turnovers in the midfield and catching teams in transition. The spine of Nagbe, Zelarayan and Zardes click, with dispossessions in midfield quickly moved up the field where new star Lucas Zelarayan develops quick chemistry with Gyasi Zardes. Eloy Room continues to star as a shot stopper, but Mensah and Wormgoor prove to be a formidable pairing in front of him, forming a stout Crew Defense. In an Eastern Conference without a truly dominant team, Columbus rises to the top.
Worst Case Scenario
7th Place Eastern Conference (44 pts), 1st round exit
Caleb Porter’s rebuild hits a snag when a couple familiar foes rise up: the injury bug and late game collapses. Darlington Nagbe has a fast start, but misses signficiant time with an injury, forcing the rookie Aiden Morris into game time way too soon. Pedro Santos struggles to find a role when pushed back to the wing, and is eventually benched. The Crew manage to cobble together a competitive club, but are beaten in the first round of the playoffs.
Realistic Scenario
4th place eastern conference (54 pts), conference semifinalists:
There is a lot to like about how the Crew are set up. In this new world of unbalanced schedules, Columbus doesn’t play either LA team, nor do they play their Heineken Rivalry Week foes the San Jose Earthquakes. The roster Bezbetchenko has built is deep, and has potential impact in that depth. The Crew should be expected to be a solid playoff team, regardless of their shortcoming last season.
As for what that might look like, Nagbe and Artur form a solid midfield pair, with Nagbe serving as the vital link between the defensive and offense, especially in transition, and Artur developing into the midfield destroyer the Crew have been lacking. Zelarayan takes some time to adjust to MLS, but ends up pouring it on, with over 15 G+A.
Harrison Afful starts to drop off, with his ability to track back on defense costing the Crew in some moments. Chris Cadden replaces Afful by July, and solidifies the RB position. Pedro Santos struggles to find his form out on the wing after dictating play last season, and is largely lost for portions of the season.
Ultimately a few minor issues hold the Crew back from being a top tier eastern conference team, leaving Tim Bez the opportunity to make some tweaks before the 2021 debut in the New Crew Stadium.

Glory to Columbus

2016.10.14 21:55 S01780 [DIPLOMACY] United States Diplomatic Visits, July - December, 2017

The White House, Washington, D.C.
President Hillary Clinton has finalized her diplomatic schedule for the remainder of 2017, having spent the first half of the year focusing on domestic issues at home. White House aides have been dispatched to communicate to intended recipients the schedule, location, and contents of the meetings requested by the United States chief executive.
[M] I'm trying a mass-post format here, because there are dozens of U.S. diplomatic interests across the world, and I can't manage them all without a bulk post (I think). If you're tagged, I would appreciate you conducting diplomacy in this post regarding the issues mentioned.
